Are We Too Comfortable With Cannibalism?

Drawing reference to Victorian England’s reaction to cannibalism, this article asks an interesting question about the “zombie apocalypse” and our reaction to it.
Personally, I don’t think that we’re exactly comfortable with cannibalism, but I think, from the vantage point of this side of history, we’re a lot more realistic about the depths to which human beings can sink.
After witnessing (or reading/hearing about) the atrocities of Nazi Germany, Rawanda, Saddam and 9/11 (just to name a few), is it really such a stretch to imagine that a human being - when reduced to his/her basest form - could eat another human being?
Also, the detachment with which we now view each other (via social media and the grotesqueries of reality TV) might make the series of gruesome crimes seem like something less than reality … if only because the idea that this apparent upswing in cannibalism might be a reflection of society at large is horrifying.
